Our Henry Bradley Curriculum

Intent

We believe that our curriculum enables all of our children to “Reach for the stars” We believe that each subject gives our children the skills and the knowledge to aspire to be whoever and whatever they want to be creating historians, artists, musicians, scientists in the making.

Our curriculum will ensure that each and every child leaves our school with a real passion for learning and wanting to be the best that they can be. We feel that our curriculum achieves this by providing each and every pupil with memorable moments and enriching experiences such as trips, local visits and visitors to bring their learning to life, in addition to inspiring lessons that fully immerse the children in the lesson, in the subject, in the learning.

Implementation

Our curriculum is underpinned by the Essentials Curriculum by Chris Quigley. The Essentials Curriculum sets out the essential coverage, learning objectives and standards which are required for all subjects. We have used the principles of this curriculum, however we have then personalised the curriculum to our school, for example we have included learning in History about Henry Bradley, we have included learning in Geography about the canal system. We believe this is essential as children should learn about the area that they live in. We now believe that we have created a true Henry Bradley curriculum that meets our children’s needs.

Our curriculum is based upon our belief that learning is a long term change to memory.  As a knowledge-engaged school, we ensure that knowledge underpins and enables the application of skills.  Both skills and knowledge are valued and are intertwined, offering a broad curriculum whilst ensuring depth of learning through repetition of the concepts in each subject.  We believe that learning is most effective with spaced repetition; each year progresses on the previous, enabling children to gain knowledge and skills in each area of the curriculum.
